Introducing AI to Educators at Day Spring Academy

On Monday, 7th May 2025, we had the pleasure of conducting an engaging AI literacy session for educators and administrative staff at Day Spring Academy in East Legon, Accra. This workshop was designed to empower participants with foundational knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and explore its practical applications in the context of teaching and learning.

A Day of Insightful Learning

The session brought together 25 participants from both the primary and secondary school sections, as well as members of the school’s administrative team. Our discussions focused on four key areas:

  • What is AI? Introducing the concept of machines that can learn and make decisions.

  • How are AI models built? Exploring the process of training models using data.

  • Ethical issues surrounding AI. Reflecting on fairness, bias, and responsible use.

  • The impact of AI on teaching and learning. Considering how AI can support educators and improve outcomes.

Hands-On Experience: Building AI in Real-Time

In the practical segment of the session, participants built their own simple AI models using Google’s Teachable Machine. This hands-on activity helped demystify AI and allowed participants to experience firsthand how machine learning models can be trained using just a webcam and a few examples.

Highlight of the Day

One of the most memorable moments came when a participant shared his personal experimentation with MetaAI on his phone. He had been teaching the AI key phrases in Nzema, a local Ghanaian language, and was impressed by the responses it generated. This sparked an exciting conversation about AI's potential for preserving and promoting local languages.

What We Learned

The workshop reinforced a critical message: AI literacy is no longer optional—it is becoming essential. Participants recognized the growing role of AI in our world and expressed a strong commitment to continuous learning and future training opportunities.
