Productive Meeting with the Spanish Embassy in Ghana on Ethical AI Education

July 28, 2025

Location: Accra, Ghana

The African Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI-4AI) recently held a fruitful meeting with the Spanish Embassy in Ghana, represented by Isabel Ibarra Serrano de Haro. Also present were Emmanuel Djaba and Eric Botchway from AI-4AI.

The discussion focused on a shared goal: helping young people understand AI in an ethical and responsible way. Both sides agreed that before introducing AI tools into schools, students need to be equipped with the critical thinking skills to evaluate what they see, especially in an age of misinformation and deepfakes.

Highlights from the discussion

Ethical integration of AI in education was a major theme. Isabel Ibarra shared concerns based on Spain’s experience with early tech adoption in classrooms. She emphasized the risks of overreliance on devices and the importance of teaching students how AI works before encouraging widespread use in schools.

From the Ghanaian perspective, Emmanuel and Eric explained that many students, especially those in rural areas, already interact with AI tools through mobile phones and platforms like YouTube. This makes AI education especially urgent.

The team from AI-4AI described how they use storytelling and real-life examples to help students better understand AI and misinformation. Both parties agreed that critical thinking, fact-checking, and digital literacy should be at the core of any AI literacy program.

Final thoughts

The meeting ended with mutual excitement about what’s ahead. Both parties expressed a strong interest in continuing to work together to promote responsible AI development.

We thank Isabel and the Spanish Embassy for their openness and shared commitment to ethical and inclusive AI education.
